Twitter is a social network that started operating in 2006 and has its main site based in San Francisco in California and with other offices in Texas and Massachusetts. The site allows its users to send and receive messages referred to as tweets. Tweets use posts that are text-based and that contain up to a maximum of 140 characters. A tweet send by one person can be visible to every subscriber but there are options that can be used to restrict a given tweet to be delivered to a specified group of subscribers. Again a subscriber can subscribe to other subscribers tweets through a process known as following.
Tweets can be sent using Twitter websites or other external compatible application like web enabled phones. Usually it is free to access the services but even then one may be required to pay some fees as dictated by service providers especially when using a phone. Over the years Twitter has gained popularity which has enabled it to have an estimated number of subscribers over 190 million who generates over 65 million messages daily and handling more than 800000 searches on a daily basis. The Twitter messages can be grouped together either by type or topic.
The Twitter network is ranked as one of the frequently visited sites all over the world and its annual growth is estimated to be well over 1000% in the first three years of its existence. The network provides its users with various tools and equipment that can be used to add content monitor conversations and content like HootSuite, Twitterfeed, Tweetdeck and Salesforce.com.
Before one becomes a subscriber on Twitter, one needs to give some specific personal information for security and safety purposes. Even then, Twitter security was reported as being vulnerable as people could easily access other people phone numbers. The report led to the network establishing a personal identification number that is used to authenticate their messages.
